La Befana
Design inspired by a modern reimagining of La Befana, Italy's beloved Christmas witch. Our interpretation presents a youthful, stylish take on the gift-bearing witch who flies across Italy on the eve of January 6th (Epiphany).
Historical Context:
La Befana's origins trace back to ancient Roman festivals and pagan traditions. Legend says she was too busy cleaning her house when the Three Wise Men invited her to join their search for baby Jesus. Realizing her mistake too late, she now eternally searches, leaving presents for children along her journey. The name "Befana" comes from the word "epifania" (Epiphany). She's depicted as an old woman riding a broomstick, wearing a black shawl, and covered in soot since she enters homes through chimneys. Despite her fearsome appearance, she's beloved across Italy as a symbol of giving and magic.
